Visiting Paris for the first time can feel daunting to even the most seasoned traveler. Trying to explore all that the City of Lights has to offer is a ginormous undertaking and even more so when you are there for only five nights. Holly and I did our best to check off our list. One thing I knew for sure: I was going to enjoy some Dammann Freres in the land of its origin. Master tea blenders since the 17th Century, the family kept their formula secrets in a vault. (I introduced Dammann to Portland 30 years ago via tea tastings and catered tea parties. Lots of tea under that bridge for both of us including their merger with Italian coffee giant, illy in 2007.) Due to a hectic schedule, the best way to ensure my sipping Dammann was at the food courts of Galeries Lafayette and La Grande Epicerie. In addition to enjoying tea on site (along with with savory dishes) both of the retail areas offered a grand selection of Dammann and numerous other high end teas. I purchased a tin of Dammann’s, ‘Nuit A Versailles’ – a delicate green sencha with notes of Violet, Bergamot and Peach. At Epicerie, I chose to bring home one of their private blends, ‘Rive Gauche a Paris’ – green sencha with Yuzu for a nice citrus twist. Throughout Paris, quality green tea including jasmine was readily available and thoughtfully served. A cafe in Versailles served a mini ice bucket with tongs for my ‘ice on the side’ order. The dinner cruise on the Seine presented a lovely Morroccan mint tea complete with Morroccan tea pot and glass. My last tea in Europe was at the Cafe Coco in the Amsterdam airport.
