Next to jasmine, sencha is my preferred choice of green tea. Both, however, are only as good as the source which leads the field wide open to disappointing results. When I was serving teas back in the early 90’s, most of the sencha on the scene was low grade and used by merchants looking for a cheap base for flavored blends. Yuck. I’m happy to say that today, thanks in part to market demands and better informed customers, sencha options have come a long way. Case in point: Kyushu Sencha. I brought some home from my recent stop at Jasmine Pearl in NE Portland and am sipping it now. Very satisfying aroma and taste from first to third brew. Excellent price point, too. Note: Congrats to Jasmine Pearl celebrating 12 yrs! Read my review from 2011 on this Portland favorite. Where does the time go? No matter. With the right tea, it goes well.
