Sleepytime … a little history and a new twist

I got acquainted with Sleepytime back in my college days when Mo Siegel was at the helm of Celestial Seasonings. There was no competition for herbal tea and no one could touch their packaging – the first to feature famous quotes and original artwork.  The company soared to record heights and was bought by Kraft in the 80’s. Then Lipton made a bid to buy it, Bigelow stopped the purchase and eventually local management took over. Mo stepped back in the driver’s seat until his final retirement a few years ago. (A merger in 2000 resulted in the current Hain Celestial Group umbrella which includes CS plus many other names you know like Soy Dream, Nile Spice and Spectrum.)

It’s been a long ride. Tea purists can find plenty of other teas out there that are better in quality and flavor and with sleeker packaging. But there’s something comforting about seeing this old favorite still on the shelf. And isn’t that what “Sleepytime” is all about? It’s internationally the familiar box to reach for at night-time. AND now there is a new companion that I’m eager to try: Sleepytime Decaf Lemon Jasmine Green.  NOTE: A recent release from CS states that they save 3.5 million lbs. of waste from entering landfills each year by NOT using strings, tags, staples and individual wrappers. Thanks, Mo!

  1. Very cool! I love Sleepytime but I’ve never heard of this new variety, which basically mixes my favorite type of green tea with one of the better herbal complements to green tea.
